Welcoming a new baby is a whirlwind of emotion, adjustment, and unforgettable memories. As a certified and experienced newborn photographer based in West Drayton, I help families capture those fleeting first moments in a way that feels calm, personal, and timeless.
One of the most common questions I get from parents is: “When should I book my baby’s first photoshoot?”
This blog is here to guide you through that decision, using my experience from hundreds of sessions at my fully equipped home photography studio.

The Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot – Why 5–14 Days Is Ideal
During the first two weeks of life, babies are still adapting to the outside world. They tend to be sleepier, more flexible, and more easily posed in those adorable curled-up positions that make newborn photography so special.
If you’re planning a baby photoshoot, I strongly recommend booking your session between 5 to 14 days after birth. Why?
Benefits of Early Newborn Photography
Your baby is sleepier, making posing more natural
Babies retain that lovely womb-like curl
Feeding and sleep patterns are more predictable
Fewer skin blemishes like baby acne
Less startle reflex during camera movements or flashes
While this window is ideal, don't worry if your baby is already a little older. I often welcome babies up to 4 weeks old and adapt the session to suit their development stage.
What Happens If I Miss the 2-Week Window?
Life with a newborn is unpredictable. If you've missed the ideal timing, you can still book a newborn photo session in West Drayton with confidence. The session may include more awake portraits, swaddled images, or parent-focused shots that highlight connection and bonding.
I offer a relaxed, baby-led experience, so whether your baby is 8 days or 4 weeks old, we’ll create a session that’s tailored to their comfort and mood. You can learn more about how I approach each session on my Newborn Photography page.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?
Ideally, I recommend booking during your second trimester, especially if you’re due during busy months like spring or autumn.
Booking early ensures:
Your spot is secured on my calendar
We have time to discuss setups, colours, and preferences
You’ll receive helpful prep advice ahead of the session
Because I run a private in-home studio, I only take a limited number of sessions each month to give every family my full attention.
